Eventually we did 3 Scottish Rovers, 1 x second class and 2 x first class. The timetable was typical of what we did and where we went and is for 1979. The pictures were taken from all 3 rovers and a holiday taken in 1977 and try to convey the atmosphere of the times....... The Mission... The days timetable with origonal notes...! Day 1. We set off from Bristol TM with 50009 as far as Gloucester where 20008 + 20128 took us to Birmingham, banked up the Licky by 37236 + 37286. Then from Birmingham to Crewe behind 86211. After that it was the overnight train to Stranraer initially with 86239 to Carlisle, then 40050 to Ayr and finally 47434 to Stranraer. Then retracing our path up to Newton On Ayr for the depot in SC51036. With the depot cleared it was onto Glasgow for a visit to Eastfield (57 locos) followed by Glasgow works (46 locos). In those days the train was stopped, everybody got off and were allowed to access the track as seen in the picture. Although not the last train to visit the branch, it was one of the last. The unit we travelled in was W51579 + W59264 + W51588 The Camel Train Leaflet The Freightliner Railtour leaflet Severnside Railtours ran a special through the Midlands up to the now closed New Holland Town station on the 19 Apriil 1980. Motive power was 31235+31175 20028+20029 The Merseyside Express leaflet On a cold, misty Saturday 14 January 1978, the DAA Railtour Society ran the final Class 24 loco hauled passenger train to run on BR. The tour, hauled by 24082 and 24133 left St Pancras and eventually ended up in Liverpool. BR kept back 3 locos for the trip before withdrawal. 2 for the trip and one spare. Woodhead trip leaflet The LCGB ran a DMU railtour from Crewe to Crewe out via the Woodhead route and back via the Hope Valley. Travelled in M56339. Yorkshire Rover leaflet £3.95. Thats all it cost to get haulage by a pair of 25's from London St Pancras via freight lines around Sheffield, to York, and back to St Pancras via Knottingly etc. How much would a similar tour cost today with a pair of 66's ! The Three Way Special railtour leaflet. The Thompson B1 Loco Society ran a long trip from London Marylebone to Manchester out via Nuneaton, Sheffield, Manchester, Lincoln, Ipswich and into London Liverpool street. A mammoth 15 hour tour with locos 31273 25040 40018 40024 40067 76049 providing the power The Pines Express leaflet Through no fault of the organisers, this train rapidly became a bit of a disaster. Origonally booked for a class 40, this had to be turned down due to non being available and also the nearest class 03 to Weymouth was Bristol, so that wasn't going to happen either. But the train never made it to Weymouth. It started off fine. We travelled to Bath and then around the freight loop at Avonmouth, back to Bath and then onto Westbury for a trip to Radstock. By now the train was running extremely late and by the time we got to Yeovil they stopped thre train and took it straight back to London. We had to make our own way back to Bristol.... The re-run was advertised for a special price of 90p but we had had enough and didn't bother. The loco was a class 47 The Mancunian leaflet. On Saturday 20 May 1978, the D1041 Preservation Society ran an excellent railtour from Cardiff to the freight only lines around Manchester. One highlight was travelling on the section from Woodley Jct to Northendon Jct, passing underneath the viaduct at Stockport. The locos for the trip were 37244+37285 84010 40109 08670 The Western Finalé leaflet Ticket for the Western Finalé railtour that ran from Exeter to York and back. The trip wasn't entirely without incident as the train hit a cow that had wandered onto the track near Charfield, north of Bristol. Apparently the brake pipe, which was broken in the impact, was mended with the aid of a penny!! The journey continued without any more problems. The loco for the trip was D1023 WESTERN FUSILIER. If you're interested, I've put an MP3 sound clip of the Western Finalé leaving Cheltenham 29 years ago. The quality may not be good but there you go.. Severn - Taff Cruncher leaflet The Garw Growler Railtour leaflet An excellent trip to some of the then remaining freight only branches. This one had 37902 37427 top 'n tailing. Yet another of the mini tours run by the Monmouthshire Railway Society. This one ran very late but all branches were acheived. Haulage provided by 37402 37258 Crewe works open day for 1977 Did this a couple of times when we caught a BR excursion to Kent. One of the BR tickets for an excursion to Grange including a trip on Lake Windermere.... or a trip back to the West Coast Main Line to se what came through! A special, DMU railtour from Lostwithial down to Fowey and back in the late 90's Gloucester had an open day on the 4th August 1991 and a few trips were run. This one was to Sharpness topped and tailed with a pair of 20's & 33's And this one to Westerleigh with 56038 & 37891 at one end, and 37040+37520 at the other Be nice if they still did this. Might stop you being searched under suspicion of being a trainspotter! One of the local Scout groups organised a trip to York and back. Best part was when 55004 raced us to Challoners Whin jct on the departure from York. Pictures are in the Type 5 section on this site..... 10 August 1979. One of the last open days at Swindon Works. For £9.50 you could buy a ticket from Bristol to any station in Devon and Cornwall, valid for a day. Fairly expensive at the time but good value all the same 50011 87003 at Carlisle on the Citadel Express Railtour. 31-10-81 50011 took us to Carlisle and back via the Settle & Carlisle. The loco could develop 1,858HP which puts it in about the same power band as a class 37 (1,750 BHP). However the continous power output was limited to 1,300 HP, similar to a class 27!!. Withdrawn in July 1981 when the closure of the Woodhead line rendered the class useless. Eventually towed to Booths in Rotherham and cut up in June 1983 76008 light engine at Darnall some 8 weeks prior to withdrawal along with all the class 76's. 26-5-81 The driver of 76049 runs round at Manchester Piccadilly on 14-10-78, to set back onto the front of our 1Z24 'Three Way Special' from London before returning to Rotherwood yard via Woodhead where 40018 will take the train forward to March. 76049 was withdrawn in November 1980 and cut in March 1983 at Booths in Rotheram. 76049 pauses at Penistone on the 1Z24 'Three Way Special' from London Marylebone - Nuneaton - Derby - Dore -Sheffield - Penistone - Woodhead - Manchester Piccadilly - Rotherwood - Lincoln Central - March - Ipswich - Colchester and finally London Liverpool Street. Withdrawn in June 1993, it was finally cut up at CF Booth Rotherham in June 2000. 08900 on Bristol Bath Road. 22-8-80 09105 on a steel train at Newport. 1-9-6 13003 is seen at Swindon on 5-10-80 and presumably is in for repair as the loco(s) wern't withdrawn until Jan 1985 and cut at Doncaster in September 1986. PWM650 seen in the old East Depot CE sidings from a passing train in pouring rain!!. 23-4-77 During our visit to the breakwater at Holyhead, we were invited by the driver of 01002 to take a cab ride from the depot to the point where they were working. Couldn't resist taking a (poor) picture during the ride ! 31-8-76 01002 on the Holyhead breakwater. Introduced in 1956 to Stratford MPD as 11505, the loco was renumbered to D2955 in the early 60's and finally once again to 01002 in June 1974. Had it survived to preservation, the loco would be over 50 years 'old'. 31-8-76 01002 on the Holyhead breakwater. The loco only ever carried one livery; BR black. The yellow 'wasp' ends being a later addition. 31-8-76 01002 stabled just outside its engine shed, some 1 1/2 miles from the breakwater proper. The loco's had a RA of 1 thus allowing them access to the entire network... 31-8-76 01002 resting outside its shed. Together with 01001, it arrived on the breakwater railway on 9 June 1967 by lorry and commenced work by carrying locally quarried stone along the breakwater as required for repairs. 01001 was withdrawn in 1971 and was left inside the shed whilst 01002 kept going until the last duty came in July 1980 whence it was also withdrawn. Local scrap merchant O R Davies and Sons cut 01001 by 26 Feb 1982 and 01002 was cut by 3 March 1982. Seen here on 31-8-76 01002, one of a class of 5 locos built for BR by Andrew Barclay in Kilmarnock, waits on the breakwater at Holyhead for the next shunting move. The crane in the background is used to lift the blocks of quarried stone into position. 31-8-76 03005 has just been, or is about to be, withdrawn from use at Cambridge MPD. Seen here on 13-11-76, it was taken to Doncaster and cut up 4 months later in March 1977. 03121 rolling past Bristol Bath Road depot. 15-10-77 03382 still in 'old livery' set off past Bristol Bath Road MPD heading West. 23-7-77 05001 seen at Sandown on the Isle of Wight on 29-7-76. Built by Hunslet in Leeds, 69 locos were built mostly for the Eastern and Scottish regions of BR. However by the time the electrification of the Island rail system was started, the sole survivor of class 05, D2554, was moved over to help with the electrification project. This finished, the loco was never repatriated to the mainline and continued in use until relieved of its duties by 03179 & 03079. 05001 rests at Sandown, Isle of Wight on 29-7-76. Initially the loco was allocated to Parkeston Quay in 1956 where it remained until 1966. Then it was transferred to the Southern Region to work the electrification trains. This required a few modifications to the loco as the loading guage for the Island was smaller than the loco. 05001 was previously 11140, then D2554 and then ultimatly renumbered 97803 on 25-1-81. 05001 at the head of a small freight at Sandown on 29-7-76. By this date the loco only saw occasional use. Introduced to Ryde shed on 7 June 1966 to help with the electrification of the Isle of Wight line between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin. The loco was withdrawn and delivered to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway for preservation on 23 August 1984. 07011 stabled at Eastleigh. 12-2-77 08126 stabled at Wigan Springs Branch. 27-12-80 08301 stabled at Wigan Springs Branch. 27-12-80 08589 on a train of steel empties coming off the Uskmouth branch at East Usk Jct, Newport. 30-12-91 08750 stabled at Harwich. 29-4-78 08756 stabled in Swansea Burrows in between shunting duties. 8-12-92 08994 pulling up a slight gradient on the BP & GV line. 1-11-93 08994 on the BP & GV freight only line from Kidwelly to Cwmmawr on a train of empties. 1-11-93 08994 heads back towards Kidwelly on the BP & GV line from Cwmmawr. 1-11-93 08994 passes over the level crossing at Fferyllfa on its way back to Coed Bach and Kidwelly. 1-11-93 Cut down cab 08994 trundles slowly along the Burry Port and Gwendreath Valley Railway branch from Kidwelly to the colliery loading point at Cwmmawr. Once loaded the train will return via the washery at Coed Bach before forwarding to its final destination. . 01002 shunts the Holyhead breakwater. The lightweight of these small shunters, about 25 tons, allowed them to work over the breakwater. 31-8-76 03121 rolling through Bristol 19-11-74 03382 used to shunt the tight radii sidings on the old cement terminal Bristol 12-9-80 06005 Dundee 24-5-80 06006 Dundee 30-7-77 13001 Tinsley 24-2-78 Built by Ruston & Hornsby in January 1957 with the serial number 408493, this 0-4-0 shunter was ordered specifically for departmental use by the Western region in Readings Signal Works. The transmission was diesel mechanical, although the wheels were chain driven from the gearbox and the loco was rated at 88 BHP for a weight of only 17 tons. Delivered to the WR with the number 20 it was renumbered to 97020 in May 1980. However withdrawal came in April 1981 and it was scrapped on site in August 1982 by Cartwrights of Tipton. For refuelling, it had to go via the main line to the depot at Reading. Photographed under a bridge and through a fence, hence the poor quality picture.... 2-7-77 03179 Ryde St Johns stabled 12 July 1989 03081 for scrap at Swindon works 23-5-81 03094 light engine at Newcastle 28-5-81 D2139 in for repair at Swindon Works. The driver tried for a good few minutes but it just wouldn't 'catch'. After the clouds of unburnt fuel had drifted away, we could breathe again !. The 47 is 47333. The train failed later that evening at Stoke Works with a broken brake pipe. 47714 assisted the train to Birmingham where 47805 took over for the remainder of the trip to Crewe. 25-2-6 40145 Holyhead 4-6-5 40175 stabled at Severn Tunnel Jct along with 45003. 9-12-79 D601 ARK ROYAL in barry scrap yard. Just visible to the right is the class 21 D6122. 20-7-77 On one occasion we were allowed to cab D818 GLORY at Swindon during a works visit and so I just had to take a picture of the controls ! 5-2-77 D818 GLORY and D1062 WESTERN COURIER seen on the turntable at Swindon. 4-11-76 D818 GLORY sat by the turntable at Swindon. The loco was withdrawn 2 1/2 years earlier and would last another 10 years before being cut up. 18-6-75 D818 GLORY is in a small shed being repainted, the half yellow panel being still in grey primer. Finally scrapped just over 5 years later when the works were closed. Swindon 5-10-80 D821 GREYHOUND & D1015 WESTERN CHAMPION on the turntable at Swindon 19-5-79 This is where it all started. At the time of writing there are about 276 main line diesels 'preserved' around the country but this picture, taken from a train passing the site of Reading's Gaswork sidings, shows D821 GREYHOUND, the very first privately preserved mainline diesel. Have a close look at the front loco, what is unique about it, 24049, that probably made it the only loco in BR service to look like this.... 24049 has finally been reduced to a pile of scrap. The number was amongst the more recognisable parts... Swindon. 5-2-77 24050 heads up 24045 at Swindon Works awaiting stripping and then scrapping. There were so many locos waiting to be scrapped at this time that they were stabled wherever they could fit. Some were adjacent to the GWR main line and most were alongside the Swindon - Gloucester line. 8-8-76 24054 at Newton Abbot but with the number TDB968008 painted on it. 26-1-80 24054 stabled at Newton Abbot as a carriage heating loco 29-7-81 24057 passing 47367 at Crewe station light engine. 24-9-77 24080 has had a bit of a crash, either in the scrap yard or else out on the main line. It survived until June 1978. The Western in the background is D1001.
