05001 rests at Sandown, Isle of Wight on 29-7-76. Initially the loco was allocated to Parkeston Quay in 1956 where it remained until 1966. Then it was transferred to the Southern Region to work the electrification trains. This required a few modifications to the loco as the loading guage for the Island was smaller than the loco. 05001 was previously 11140, then D2554 and then ultimatly renumbered 97803 on 25-1-81.

05001 seen at Sandown on the Isle of Wight on 29-7-76. Built by Hunslet in Leeds, 69 locos were built mostly for the Eastern and Scottish regions of BR. However by the time the electrification of the Island rail system was started, the sole survivor of class 05, D2554, was moved over to help with the electrification project. This finished, the loco was never repatriated to the mainline and continued in use until relieved of its duties by 03179 & 03079.Previous | Next05001 at the head of a small freight at Sandown on 29-7-76. By this date the loco only saw occasional use. Introduced to Ryde shed on 7 June 1966 to help with the electrification of the Isle of Wight line between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin. The loco was withdrawn and delivered to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway for preservation on 23 August 1984.
