Start ! A Scottish Railrover. Eventually we did 3 Scottish Rovers, 1 x second class and 2 x first class. The timetable was typical of what we did and where we went and is for 1979. The pictures were taken from all 3 rovers and a holiday taken in 1977 and try to convey the atmosphere of the times.......
The Mission...
Scottish Rover ticket. The first class ones were not much more expensive but gave access to a single berth on the sleepers, access to the observation coach on the Kyle line, and less crowded compartments etc.

Day 1. We set off from Bristol TM with 50009 as far as Gloucester where 20008 + 20128 took us to Birmingham, banked up the Licky by 37236 + 37286. Then from Birmingham to Crewe behind 86211. After that it was the overnight train to Stranraer initially with 86239 to Carlisle, then 40050 to Ayr and finally 47434 to Stranraer. Then retracing our path up to Newton On Ayr for the depot in SC51036. With the depot cleared it was onto Glasgow for a visit to Eastfield (57 locos) followed by Glasgow works (46 locos). Then the rest of the day travelling around some of the local branches before heading back to Carlisle for about 5 hours spotting!

Day 2. Sunday, a day spent clearing as many of the commuter and branch lines around Glasgow on the reduced Sunday service. Out to Helensburgh, Airdrie, Motherwell for the depot, Wemyss, Paisley, Gourock before heading for Stirling via Edinburgh and back to Carlisle (again!)
