Rare to see this class in Bristol except on the occasional late night mail turn. 21-6-80 I had this via email from Mark "I rode the train on that day to Bristol parkway, can still remember waiting all day at Bristol for it to come of the depot and go to Malago carriage sidings for the stock .... also if you look at some of your shots you may notice that the royal headcode was put up, by yours truly, but changed before departure by the driver.we didn't hit more that 30mph up the 1:75 of horfield bank, not bad for 16 coaches...... happy days ps 40155 did the same working either the week before or after.... "

A very early and frosty morning sees 40136 failing to start. The driver tried for a good few minutes but it just wouldn't 'catch'. After the clouds of unburnt fuel had drifted away, we could breathe again !. The 47 is 47333. Wigan Springs Branch. 27-12-80

D601 ARK ROYAL awaits cutting in Barry scrapyard on 6-8-76. It was finally scrapped in June 1980. From memory this loco was completely stripped of anything and everything moveable and also seemed to serve as the gentlemens toilets in the scrap yard.!!
On one occasion we were allowed to cab D818 GLORY at Swindon during a works visit and so I just had to take a picture of the controls ! 5-2-77

This is where it all started. At the time of writing there are about 276 main line diesels 'preserved' around the country but this picture, taken from a train passing the site of Reading's Gaswork sidings, shows D821 GREYHOUND, the very first privately preserved mainline diesel. The 'Warship' with 'Hymek' D7029 (bought for £3240 !) rest in a very exposed position as a member of the DTG gets to work on the class 42. 13-11-76
