Pilning. Is this the quietest station in the country. With only 2 trains a week, this isn't exactly the Clapham Jct of the South West!  The only regular passenger is the gentleman seen exiting the unit who, I'm told, catches it every week, thus ensuring the survival of the station... for the moment. Further enquiries reveal that Denton and Reddish South have had for years just one train a week calling. That means one of Denton's platforms is never used... Then there is Newhaven Harbour where the booked train (one a day, I believe) doesn't actually call, but a notice invites potential passengers to take a taxi to Town Station. And finally, Teesside Airport. Only one train in each direction a week, both of them on a Saturday. 29-8-9

The loco nearest the camera is class 41, 41002, but this was renumbered to W43001 when the train was reclassified as a multiple unit, becoming 252001. After use on the Western Region they were taken into departmental use for a while and it gained the number ADB975813 as seen in this picture. Finally withdrawn in December 1988 it was cut by CF Booths in Rotheram in December 1990. Sister loco 41001 (W43000 & RDB975812) seen behind, was more fortunate and is preserved at the National Railway Museum in York. Seen here on 25-4-81
